Female 50-over Inter-County: Demerara quartet hands Essequibo 185-run defeat

Spurred on by brilliant individual performances from four players, Demerara inflicted a huge 185-run defeat on Essequibo in the opening round of the Guyana Cricket Board’s Senior Female Inter-County 50-over competition on Friday.
Playing at the Malteenoes Sports Club on Thomas Lands in Georgetown, Demerara controlled the contest for the most part, posting a formidable 273 before skittling out Essequibo for just 88.

Opener Mandy Mangru and skipper Cherry-Ann Fraser were the standouts with the bat for Demerara, both scoring half-centuries, while spin pair Latisha Jordon and Nya Latchman did the damage with the ball.
Demerara would have been disappointed falling short of a 300-plus total, given the fine opening partnership by Mangru and the talented Naomi Barkoye.
The pair added 109 in 17.3 overs before Barkoye was run out for 27 off 50 balls (4x4s).
Tilleya Madramootoo fell soon after without scoring, paving the way for a 57-run partnership between Mangru and Fraser for the third wicket.
Once they were separated though, the Essequibo bowlers did well to peg the scoring and take wickets at regular intervals.
The diminutive Mangru, who played a solitary ODI for West Indies against South Africa in February 2022, struck a career-best 81 off 82 balls, an innings that included seven fours and two sixes.
The left-handed Fraser, who has played 12 ODIs and 12 T20Is for West Indies, slammed five fours and three sixes in a rapid 68 off 52 balls, while extras contributed 60 to the total, 46 of which were wides.
Bowling for Essequibo, Yonette Welcome took 3-48 and Nikesha Narine 2-65.
It was a struggle for the Essequibo batters, with only opener Lavina Ragobeer with 21 off 63 balls (2x4s) and Analesia D’Aguiar with 16 off 14 (2x4s, 1×6) getting into double-figures as spin pair Jordon and Latchman wreaked havoc.
Off-spinner Jordon picked up 4-16 off four overs, while leg-spinner Latchman had 4-25 off four.
The 50-over competition will continue on Sunday (February 11) with Essequibo against Berbice at the Meten-Meer-Zorg ground, followed by the final round between Demerara and Berbice on February 13 at Malteenoes.
Games will start at 09:30h.
This will be followed by the T20 segment, with all matches at Malteenoes starting at 13:30h.

The Inter-County competition is being used to select the Guyana team to compete in the Cricket West Indies Regional Women’s tournament, set for St. Kitts in March.
