Everest Cricket Club on Tuesday continued the tradition of honouring its West Indian players, conferring the latest headline act Shamar Joseph with Life Membership.
Club President Manzoor Nadir related that Joseph’s heroics on the recent Test tour to Australia were most memorable and inspirational as he reflected on when West Indies previously won on the 1997 tour.
Further, Nadir announced that upon completion of the ongoing upgrade works to host practice sessions during the Men’s World T20 in June, the club would rename the northern end of the ground the ‘Shamar Joseph End.’
Club captain Dwayne Adams and Public Relations Officer John Ramsingh also commended Joseph on a superb debut series that has reignited support for the men in maroon worldwide.
Joseph, from Baracara, East Berbice, joined the city club last year with his brother and has represented the Camp Road at the First Division level in Georgetown.
In Berbice, he plays for Tucber Park Cricket Club.
Humbled by the recognition from one of the long-standing cricket clubs in the city, the 24-year-old expressed it was truly an honour to become a Life Member.
He hopes that the placing of his name to an end at the venue can inspire and motivate young players to strive for success.
Joseph said he plans on making full use of the improved facilities at the club when he is in the city to develop his skills further, as he admitted there is more to learn about cricket.
Meanwhile, former Executive Member and current Managing Director of The New Doctor’s Clinic, Satyendra Khemraj, continued another tradition as he gifted Joseph a 14-karat gold cricket bat pendant.
Khemraj exuded joy seeing a fellow Guyanese reap such tremendous success on the international stage and felt privileged to honour the promising fast bowler with a unique token.
