Policeman, 41, dies in accident at Blankenburg

An accident at about 09:25 hrs Saturday on the Blankenburg Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD) claimed the life of a cop who was at the time riding a motorcycle.

The dead man was identified as Devaraj Dhandreaw, a 41-year-old Lance Corporal who was stationed at the La Grange Police Station, and resided at Anna Catherina New Housing Scheme, WCD.

The accident involved motor lorry #GAE 8523 owned by Pooran Brothers of Bella Dam, West Bank Demerara, and driven at the time by a 35-year-old driver from Tuschen. Dhandreaw was riding a motorcycle.

A statement from police headquarters noted that the lorry was proceeding along the southern side of the road when the driver put on his indicator to turn right into Newland Lumber Yard. On doing so, Dhandreaw who was proceeding west on the road at a fast rate, collided with the left side rear portion of the lorry.

As a result of the collision, the policeman fell onto the roadway and received injuries on his body. he was picked up in an unconscious state, placed in the lorry, and escorted to Leonora Cottage Hospital where the body was seen and examined by a doctor who pronounced him dead.

A notice of intended prosecution was served on the Lorry driver, who is in custody assisting police with the ongoing investigation.

    Police motor cyclist going at fast rate/speed, collided with lorry in the rear left side, that indicated to turn right.
    Since the police can’t charge the dead policeman, they want to charge the lorry driver ???? For what ????
