Toshao dies after intoxicated, speeding driver runs him over


An accident that occurred at about 19:22 hrs Friday along the Quarrie Access Trail in Central Rupununi, Region Nine claimed the life of Karl Lewis, a 52-year-old Deputy Toshao of Shulinab Village, South Central Rupununi.
The accident involved a motor pickup #PVV 1398, owned by Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) and driven at the time by a 39-year-old resident of Lethem, and a motorcycle driven by Lewis.
Police Headquarters, in a statement, noted that Lewis was riding along the eastern side of Quarrie Access Trail while the driver of the pickup was imbibing at Katoonarib Village with a friend when they left for Lethem, proceeding along the eastern side of Quarrie Access Trail at a fast rate, and in the path of the motorcyclist.
The driver of the pickup attempted to swerve from the motorcycle but failed to avoid a collision. As a result, Lewis received injuries on his body and the motorcycle became engulfed in flames.
Lewis was picked up by the police and public-spirited citizens in an unconscious condition and taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The body was escorted to the Lethem Regional Hospital’s Mortuary and is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The driver of the Pickup is in custody.
