Springer and Roberts headline Guyana’s CARIFTA Track and Field team for Grenada

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has named a 23-member team for the 51st CARIFTA Track and Field Championships in Grenada from March 30 to April 1.

Returning from the previous team are Gold medalists, Tianna Springer and Javon Roberts, along with Nerissa McPherson, Attoya Harvey, Malachi Austin, Athaleyah Hinckson, and Duel Europe.

The team will be accompanied by Thelson Williams (Manager), Akeem Stewart (Physiotherapist), Wayne Pantlitz (male coach), Trishel Thompson (female coach)

At the previous edition in The Bahamas, Guyana won eight medals – three gold, two silver, and three bronze.

The team was selected following trials on February 3, 17 and 18.

News Room Sport was informed that there would be two training camps – March 8-10 and March 22 -24 at the National Track and Field Facility, West Coast Demerara.

According to Keith Campbell, the Vice President of the AAG and Chairperson of the AAG’s Records and Registration Committee, the initial team was 19, of which 11 would have made the qualifying standard, but they opted to add the additional persons who came extremely close to qualifying.

Campbell thanked the immense support of the National Sports Commission and the Guyana Olympic Association.

Athaleyah Hinckson will look to medal in both the 100m and 200m after missing out on the podium in The Bahamas

U-20 Females: Tianna Springer (400m, 200m, 4x400m, 4x400m mixed relay), Charissa December (400m Hurdles, 4x400m), Attoya Harvey ( 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 4x400m, 4x400m mixed relay), Narissa McPherson (400m, 4x400m, 4x400m mixed relay), Nalicia Glen (100m, 200m).

U-20 Males: Jaheel Cornette (100m, 200m), Javon Roberts (800m, 1500m, 4x400m, 4x400m mixed relay), Malachi Austin 200m, 400m, 4x400m, 4x400m mixed relay), Rodell Green (Long Jump, Triple Jump), Jamal Sullivan (800m, 1500 m, 4×400 m, 4×400m mixed relay), Robert Marcus (Long Jump, Triple Jump), Danielson Gill (400m, 4x400m, 4x400m mixed relay).

 U-17 Females: Athaleyah Hinckson (100m, 200m), Esther McKinnon (1500m, 3000m), Akilla Blucher (1500m), Keneta Fraser (Long Jump, 100m, 200m), Marissa Thomas (400m, 800m)

U-17 Males: Duel Europe (Long Jump, Triple Jump), Skylar Charles (100m, 200m), Kaidon Persaud (400m, 800m), Ezekiel Millington (100m, 200m), Ryan Joseph (Long Jump, Triple Jump), Nathaniel Samaroo (Shot Put, Discus Throw)
