5 rescued by Prison Officers after boat capsizes

Ranks from the Mazaruni Prison location rescued five miners following a boat mishap in the Mazaruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).

The incident occurred around 12:30 hrs on Tuesday. Information revealed that the crew was transporting fuel to a mining camp located at Itabli, the Guyana Prison Service noted in a press release.

“At the time of the incident, Superintendent of Prisons Carlton Cameron and Prison Trade Instructor Mc Andrew were returning from Bartica when they observed the partially submerged boat,” the release noted.

The ranks quickly rendered assistance and the civilians were rescued and transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital for medical attention.

The cause of the mishap is yet to be ascertained as the Guyana Police Force will investigate the incident.

“Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot commended the officers for their heroic act by rescuing the persons,” the release concluded.
