Graham’s Hall man charged with causing road death, granted $400,000 bail

Edward Sampson, a resident of Graham’s Hall, East Coast Demerara, was on Tuesday charged with the offence of causing death by dangerous driving and granted $400,000 bail by Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool.

The fatal accident occurred on September 21, 2023 at about 22:30 hrs at La Bonne Intention (LBI) Railway Embankment last September; Sampson was driving motor car #PMM 8295 when he hit down pedestrian Patrick Nicholas Mamasee, of Triumph, East Coast Demerara and then fled the scene.

The police on Wednesday said the 37-year-old man appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The matter was adjourned until April 4, 2024; Sampson was also previously charged with failure to report an accident and was placed on bail.

According to reports, police had sought the public’s assistance in identifying the victim and Sampson surrendered to the police.

Mamasee was found unconscious on the roadway with visible injuries to his body and concerned residents notified the police, leading the man to be transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he succumbed to his injuries.
