Serial robber sentenced to four years imprisonment

A 20-year-old labourer was on Friday sentenced to four years imprisonment on two of seven counts of armed robbery, all of which he admitted to committing.

Matthew Sylvain of North Melanie, East Coast Demerara (ECD) appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Police said the robberies were committed between February 21 and 27, 2024.

Five of the charges were read to Sylvain by Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.

The victims in those cases are Delon McBeth, Wei Zu Chin, Shantie Mohan, Diana Simon and Steven Gopaul.

He pleaded guilty to all of the five charges and was remanded to prison pending probation and conviction reports.

Those matters were adjourned to March 15 for report and sentencing.

Sylvain appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly to answer to the other two charges.

He pleaded guilty to those too and was sentenced to a total of four years imprisonment – two years on each charge.
