Man nabbed with 4lbs of ganja

Chadwain Eastman, a 34-year-old labourer of Ebini, Berbice River, was nabbed with 1,814 grammes (or about four pounds) of marijuana on Sunday.

Police Headquarters reported that Officers were crossing the Berbice River on a pontoon at Tacama Junction at around 11:30 hrs on Sunday when they saw Eastman on a motorcycle approaching the pontoon.

When he saw the officers, Eastman reportedly turned his motorcycle- #HC 8990- around and started riding away. The ranks immediately drove off the pontoon, gave chase and apprehended the suspect.

Once apprehended, the ranks searched the suspect and the haversack he had on his person.

Police found a large bulky parcel, wrapped in transparent plastic in his haversack. The parcel was opened in Eastman’s presence and the ranks found leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be Cannabis.

Eastman was told of the offence committed, cautioned, arrested and taken into police custody. He was later escorted to Mackenzie Police Station along with the motorcycle. At the station, the suspected cannabis was weighed and then photographed, marked, sealed and lodged.

Additionally, the suspect was questioned about the motorcycle and he claimed that in December 2023, a man from Georgetown brought the bike to Linden and sold it to him for 12 pounds of marijuana.

The suspect remains in Police custody, pending charges.
