GOA recruits UG student for technical support internship

De Shawn Joseph, a University of Guyana Student, was recently recruited by the Guyana Olympic Association as a Project Intern Technical Support staff member through a Commonwealth Games Federation funding provision, the Commonwealth Games Federation EQUIP programme.

According to the GOA, Deshawn was selected amongst eight interns submitted by the University of Guyana and interviewed by the GOA.

His services will be key to the implementation of various organizational systems strategies and projects within the GOA realm.

The position of Project Intern is made possible through a grant provided by the Commonwealth Games Federation, geared towards giving the GOA, a  Commonwealth Games Association, with a key resource to assist with the enhancement and implementation of various organizational systems strategies and projects.

It will involve communications and public relations campaign strategies, implementation of new systems and projects, exploration and development of opportunities for the formation of crucial partnerships with agencies, and research for project application.

All of these activities aim to build capacity, improve operational efficiency, and position the GOA of Guyana on a growth pathway.

The internship will also provide an opportunity and platform for the selected intern to learn sports administration in events/ projects, in addition to providing an environment for the empowerment of the chosen candidate as a young leader to deliver unique projects, make positive change in sport ecosystem and their communities, while gaining valuable employment, opportunities for networking and career and skills development experience in the process.

His engagement with the GOA forms part of a collaboration between the University of Guyana and the Guyana Olympic Association geared towards cooperation and partnership in the following areas.

  • Developing Internships and scholarship partnerships opportunities.
  • Sports Development at the University and National Sport organization level.
  • Developing a nucleus of persons who would support and serve the sport ecosystem in Guyana
  • Training Joint Seminars and Conferences.
  • Research and Publication; Curriculum and Professional Development
  • Identification of areas of research, projects & student assignments at the different faculty levels that benefit sports and enhance the performance of athletes and national federations.
  • Mutually beneficial Sports projects and other beneficial activities

De Shawn recently represented Guyana at the Commonwealth Games Federation eQUIP Project mandatory intern training and orientation workshop, which was held in Bermuda from March 2 to 5, 2024.

GOA will continue to recruit University of Guyana students as part of the collaboration.
