Individual query cannot derail the positive report that Guyana is receiving at the UN Human Rights Committee – President Ali

The United Nations Human Rights Committee has given the Government a positive review over the last two days, despite a query raised by a single member of the committee, which was separately reported in the media, following the narrative of the political opposition.

The query did not go unnoticed, particularly for echoing the unfounded narrative of the political opposition, rather than adopting an approach grounded in facts and evidence.

President Irfaan Ali, when contacted by the News Room on Tuesday, also expressed his disappointment.

“First of all, this issue was not raised as a substantive matter by the HR committee of the UN. An individual member, who is obviously fed with the propaganda of opposition operatives, raised a query in line with the narrative of the opposition, trying to paint the Government in a particular light,” stated President Ali.

He further stated, “The reference to corruption was not based on any evidence or facts but was more or less a parroted position by an individual on the committee. Unfortunately, this member found himself in a trap that the opposition historically used against the PPP/C Government. Recall the countless public calls about corruption, none of which could have been proven in the five years of the APNU/AFC.

“What the opposition does is find conduits through which their messaging can infiltrate international institutions, in this case trying to use this individual position to derail the two days of positive review Guyana had at the committee itself. As a Government, we are committed to upholding the high value of every institution of the UN and will continue to actively participate.

“It is interesting that the very individual did not mention the fact that the very persons making the complaints individually and collectively tried to steal the elections in Guyana and derail democracy. We invite all members of the committee to verify every allegation with the facts, evidence, and the truth; that is all we ask.”
