Schoolgirl, 9, dies after hit by intoxicated, speeding driver

Terensha Pierre, a 9-year-old girl from Barima Nobo, Region One succumbed to injuries she received in an accident on Monday afternoon.

The Grade Five pupil of Hosororo Primary School was struck down by a motorcar while crossing the road at Mabaruma Compound at about 15:30 hrs.

A relative told the News Room that the young girl would usually stay with her after school until her mother picks her up.

“She came and it is an everyday thing, she collected money to go over to the shop. So when she came, she collect the money and went to the shop, she had already crossed the road and was in the corner when the car came,” the relative explained.

According to the relative after being struck, the driver ran over the child who was flung some distance away.

The young girl died while on her way to Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical treatment.

“This happened yesterday afternoon, but she died on her way to Georgetown after 1 pm,” the relative said.

Meanwhile, Regional Commander Himnauth Sawh revealed that the driver of the car was found to be over the legal alcohol limit when a breathalyzer test was done and was allegedly speeding at the time of the accident.

“The young lady was standing in the middle of road, because the road in Mabaruma split into two at that location and as she tried to cross to the other end the vehicle collided with her,” the Commander said.

The young girl suffered serious head injuries.

The driver remains in custody at the Mabaruma Police Station and he will be charged and placed before the court.
