Conal Husbands, the motorcyclist who died in a tragic accident at Cummings and Church Streets on Monday was a caring older brother who met an untimely demise, according to the man’s younger sister, Giselle Husbands.

Giselle, one of three of Conal’s sisters on Wednesday told the News Room that the man died as a result of multiple injuries while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital at about 13:30 hrs.

“We are barely hanging on a thread and it’s just numbness and emptiness. I got a call and she said ‘it’s Conal, he was in an accident and he’s listed as critical,’ [and] my nightmare just started,” Giselle said.

The 46-year-old security manager was heading to work when the accident occurred.

Based on the investigation, police said at about 6:30 hrs on Monday, a car, driven by Lee Lawrence Holder, 47, of Paradise, was proceeding north along the western lane of Cummings Street while the motorcyclist was proceeding east of Church Street. As the car and motorcycle approached the intersection, the driver of the car allegedly failed to stop at the ‘stop sign’ and collided with the motorcycle.

As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist was flung some distance onto the northern parapet of Church Street and sustained severe injuries.

Giselle said it is devastating for the family because there were other fatalities in the family including the brutal double murder at Saxacalli Mission involving David Gomes, and his 75-year-old mother Elizabeth ‘Nellie’ Gomes, who were chopped to death by prison escapee Akeem Wong.

She said her brother has two sons – 15 and 16 years old – and he was a hard worker and always willing to help people.

Conal Husbands died in the accident involving his motorcycle and a car.

Giselle said her brother’s condition was critical and she opined that the hospital didn’t give him blood although he needed it. He also needed surgery for his broken jaw.

“They had the neck support on him, they bandage up his throat, the doctor said the tube was put down the wrong part of the throat so it wasn’t helping him to breathe.

“They said they got him at 8, he died around 1:30, that’s five and a half hours, he was already in a critical position, his blood pressure was low, his oxygen level was low…he needed surgery, he died from multiple injuries, his head, chest, jaw broken in seven different places,” Giselle said.

The man’s niece, Krystal Lyken believes that Holder was speeding and she blames the man for the accident. The family said Holder is expected to appear in Court sometime next week.
