Guyana Defence Force Soldier, Sergeant Deslyn Nicholson died last night following a motor vehicle accident.

Nicholson was among a number of ranks participating in the Force 30km Annual walk which commenced at approximately 17;50 hrs on Wednesday.

While in the vicinity of the Splashmins Fun Park on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, Nicholson and two others were struck by a truck bearing number plate (GAC 5915.)

SGT Nicholson and the two other soldiers were rushed to the Diamond Hospital Complex by a GDF ambulance.

She was pronounced dead.

The News Room understands that the soldiers were not wearing the required reflective clothing and neither was the Traffic Department of the Guyana Police Force notified of the walk.

The GDF responded to these queries and said that by Standard Operating Procedures, the GDF is mandated to conduct a Board of Inquiry into this incident.

“We wish not to prejudice the investigation but note that all precautionary measures are taken on board when such events are being conducted inclusive of ambulance, reflectors etc,” Heppelina Ferguson, GDF’s Public Relations Officer said.

The truck driver is in police custody but claims he did not see the soldiers until he came into contact with them.

Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, Officers and Ranks of the Guyana Defence Force extends sincere condolences to the family of Sergeant Deslyn Nicholson.
