Two persons who were intercepted by ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) and the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard on Friday, are in custody after narcotics were found in their possession.
According to a press release from CANU, the authorities were conducting a joint operation at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo when they intercepted a “go fast” vessel with the two occupants on board.
Upon searching the vessel, a large quantity of narcotics along with a quantity of fuel and other items were discovered and the two persons were arrested.
They said the narcotics was tested and proven to be cocaine. The total when weighed amounted to 536 kilos or 1,181 lbs, with a street value in Guyana of $2.6 million USD. Had the cocaine been transshipped to its intended destination it would’ve amounted to a street value of over 20 million euros, according to CANU.
They are currently in custody as the investigations continue.
