System failures at the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Kingston, Georgetown and Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara, locations on Friday caused countrywide power outages.

The company’s System Control and Operations Manager, Navin Deonarayan, in a video update regarding the situation, said at 02:44 hrs on Friday, there was a shutdown at Kingston caused by a damaged cable.

“A total shutdown that was caused by a damaged cable at our Kingston location. We worked assiduously to repower the system and fix that problem, however, upon reclosing we experienced another failure at that location,” Deonarayan said.

This issue was rectified but another shutdown occurred during the afternoon at the Gardn of Eden location.

“That was investigated and we subsequently found what the issue was and we corrected it. We have powered back the entire system and we continue to supply the country with reliable power,” Deonarayan said.

He assured that the agency is working assiduously to ensure that these issues do not occur again.
