Essequibo pulled off a thrilling run-chase on Sunday to defeat Demerara in the opening round of the Guyana Cricket Board’s Under-19 Female Inter-County T20 competition at the Malteenoes Sports Club ground, Thomas Lands, Georgetown.

Set a target of 143, Essequibo got home off the first ball of the 18th over to spark vociferous celebrations from the young ladies in yellow.

Essequibo got a flying start of 39 in five overs by openers Tremaine Marks (13) and Aliyah DaSilva (11) and that was just the momentum they needed to push for victory.

A third wicket partnership of 61 between skipper Laurene Williams and Shonette Belgrave proved decisive as the pair batted Demerara out of the contest.

Player-of-the-Match Williams struck a top score of 32 off 24 (2x4s), while Belgrave scored 27 off 17 (2x4s, 1×6), before Thaliah Hack (5*) and Qzel Sampson (8*) sealed the deal for Essequibo.

Bowling for Demerara, senior national players Naomi Barkoye (2-25) and Nyia Latchman (2-27) were among the wickets. Demerara leaked 40 extras (five byes, one leg bye, 26 wides, eight no-balls).
