Two charged for rape, murder of Berbice woman

Two men appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court on Monday and were jointly charged with the murder of a 45-year-old woman from No. 0 Village (No. 54 Village), Corentyne, Berbice.

Yogindra Pokhai,18 and Tishan David, 25 appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy. They were charged with murder in the furtherance of sexual assault committed on Ninawattie Nandalall called ‘Sharda’. The duo were represented by Attorney-at-law Mursaline Bacchus and were remanded to prison. The matter was transferred to the No.51 Magistrate’s Court on May 8, 2024.

The News Room reported that the woman left home around noon on Thursday in search of mangoes to make achar to sell. When she failed to return home, her son along with other relatives decided to launch a search. The woman’s naked body was found in the backland with injuries to her face and neck.

Three persons were arrested and two confessed to committing the act. They detailed that they ventured to the backlands area where they would set traps to catch wild animals and also engage in (smoking) marijuana. There, they met the woman.

The suspects said they talked with the woman and during the conversation asked her to engage in sexual intercourse, after she refused, they forced themselves onto her and sexually assaulted her. She threatened to inform the police and that’s when they decided to kill her out of fear that they would be identified and arrested. One of the men used a knife to commit the act.

A post mortem examination revealed that the woman died from asphyxiation, an incised wound to the neck, and a fracture of the cervical spine.
