Interdicted Lance Corporal Kristoff De Nobrega was on Tuesday committed to stand trial in the High Court for the 2022 murder of young father, Quindon Bacchus.

DeNobrega 24, of Canal Dam, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara was committed by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.

According to the Statement of Offence, DeNobrega on June 10, 2022, murdered Bacchus at Haslington New Scheme, East Coast of Demerara.

Magistrate Azore ruled that a prima facie case had been made against DeNobrega for him to be tried at the High Court. He will go on trial at the next practical sitting of the Demerara Assizes and will remain on remand.

Two other cops, Lance Corporal Thurston Simon, 26, of Bareroot, East Coast Demerara and Cadet Officer 37-year-old Dameion McClennon of Patterson, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara were both charged with attempting to obstruct the course of justice by giving false information to the police during the investigation.

This matter is still ongoing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that Bacchus was selling an illegal firearm to De Nobrega, during which shots were fired.

The Police initially reported that Bacchus first fired shots at the cops. However, a police ballistic analyst reported that the gun Bacchus had “was not in working order.”

It is alleged that on June 11, 2022, Simon in an attempt to cover up what transpired, wrote a false statement.

Simon claimed that he did not fire any shots at Bacchus but according to the police facts, another police rank on the operation claimed that he saw when Simon shot at Bacchus.

Mc Lennon denied shooting at Bacchus, but investigators recovered two spent shells fired from his service weapon at the crime scene.

Bacchus’s fatal shooting has had much public attention, with his family calling for justice and an independent probe.

Following news of his death, a protest erupted along the East Coast of Demerara corridor resulting from a false report on social media which claimed that the rank who allegedly shot and killed Bacchus had been released.
