U-19 Inter-county: Dindyal (102*), Mohabir (53*) power Demerara to huge win over Berbice

- Vieira, Lovell and Cholai star as Essequibo crush Select XI

A superb hundred from West Indies Under-19 batsman Mavindra Dindyal, backed up by solid batting from Alvin Mohabir, powered Demerara to a commanding seven-wicket win over defending champions Berbice in the Guyana Cricket Board’s Under-19 Inter-county 50-over competition on Tuesday at the Malteenoes Sports Club.

In the other third round game, Essequibo whipped the Select XI by 146 runs at the Lusignan Community Centre ground, East Coast Demerara.

At Malteenoes: Demerara defeated Berbice by seven wickets

SUMMARY: Berbice 223-9 from 50 overs (Salim Khan 47, Afraz Budhoo 45; Anthon Lim 3-58, Neeran Bani 2-17, Krsna Singh 2-41) vs Demerara 227-3 from 35.5 overs (Mavindra Dindyal 102*, Alvin Mohabir 53*, Sachin Balgobin 30; Kumar Deopersaud 1-36, Afraz Budhoo 1-41)

In a clash of the two unbeaten teams, Demerara prevailed over Berbice, a victory that would give tremendous confidence heading into Thursday’s final against the same opposition at Malteenoes from 09:30h.

Set a target of 224, Demerara got a solid start of 48 from 10.4 overs between opener Sachin Balgobin (30) and Romeo Deonarain (9). Both were dismissed with the score on 48, before Dindyal and Ryan Latiff (19) added 41 for the third wicket.

At 89-3 in the 19th over the Berbicians were hoping to make further inroads, but Dindyal and Mohabir combined to blunt the attack of the defending champions.

The pair added an unbroken 138 for the fourth wicket in just 17.3 overs to close out the contest with conviction. Dindyal, who earlier this year played the ICC Youth World Cup, struck 10 fours and seven sixes in an innings that spanned 72 balls.

Mohabir’s knock of 53* came off 48 (9x4s). Bowling for Berbice, Kumar Deopersaud took 1-36 and Afraz Budhoo 1-41.

Salim Khan (47 off 50) and Budhoo (45 off 58) had earlier lifted Berbice from 68-4 halfway through the 21st over to 223-9.

Several batsmen got starts- including Kevin Kisten (19), Rampertab Ramnauth (17) and Rashad Gaffur (16)- but failed to carry on.

Bowling for Demerara, Anthon Lim took 3-58, Neeran Bani 2-17 and Krsna Singh 2-41.

At Lusignan: Essequibo defeated the Select XI by 146 runs

SUMMARY: Essequibo 250-5 from 50 overs (Shahid Vieira 80*, Thaddeus Lovell 51, Jadon Campbell 31, Ranaldo Jeffery 28, Mahem Khan 25; Avishkar Beharry 2-35) vs Select XI 104 from 29.1 overs (Shiloh Adams 32, Jeremiah Hohenkirk 31; Golcharran Chulai 5-18, Mahem Khan 2-39)

National Under-17 left-arm spinner Golcharran Chulai produced remarkable figures of 5-18 off seven overs as the Select XI were dismissed for 104 from 29.1 overs after being set a target of 251.

Mahem Khan supported with 2-39 as Shiloh Adams (32) and Jeremiah Hohenkirk (31) got starts for the Select XI.

Essequibo earlier put up a solid batting effort, piling up the highest total of this year’s competition to date: 250-5.

Batting at number four, wicketkeeper/batsman Shahid Vieira struck an unbeaten 80 off 82 balls (7x4s, 2x6s), adding 81 for the fifth wicket in just 6.1 overs with Thaddeus Lovell, who slammed six sixes and two fours in 51 off 20.

Opener Jadon Campbell made 31 off 59 (2x4s), Ranaldo Jeffery 28 off 59 (3x4s, 1×6) and Khan 25 off 28 (4x4s). Bowling for the Select XI, Avishkar Beharry bagged 2-35.

The competition is being hosted to select the national team to compete in the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 competition in July in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
