Three crucial things happened at the Malteenoes Sports Club on Thursday, and at the end of them all, Demerara assumed the reign of Under-19 Inter-county 50-over champs, topping Berbice by seven wickets in the final.

The tremendous bowling exploits of the effervescent Jonathan Van Lange, with seven wickets for little, would be recorded in the books for posterity, but the ill-advised shot selection of Berbice and their subsequent raggedness in the field would only linger in the minds of those who witnessed it.

Take nothing away from Van Lange- he found a nagging line and length on a conducive pitch, maximising the early morning moisture.

However, an argument can be made that had the young Berbice batters applied the fundamentals of the game and bided their time, the woefully insufficient 90 they made in 19 (yes, 19) of the allotted 50 overs could have been so many more.

And maybe the result could have been different.

Van Lange’s splendid effort of 7-25 off six impactful overs proved the difference between the sides in a game that last just over 50 overs.

The Demerara Cricket Club all-rounder ran through Berbice top and middle order in a spell for the ages, as Berbice capitulated spectacularly after an opening partnership of 41 between the Ramnauth brothers that was built on 24 extras.

Anthon Lim provided the breakthrough when skipper Rampertab Ramnauth (6) was brilliantly caught by a diving Krsna Singh at mid-on.

That opened the floodgates, as Van Lange proceeded to dismiss Rampersaud Ramnauth (19), Kevin Kisten (5), Rashad Gaffur (0), Damion Cecil (1), Sanjay Algoo (6), Salim Khan (4) and Ayhinde Roger (0) in a memorable spell of bowling.

Singh added the wicket of Afraz Budhoo (15) and Neeran Bani snapped up last man Kumar Deopersaud (0) as the last eight wickets tumbled for just 25 runs.

While the records would show a triumph for Demerara, it would not speak to the efforts of the Berbice bowlers receiving little to no support from the fielders.

Several catches- the majority of them simple at this level- were floored, and that further minimised the little wiggle room that comes with defending low totals.

Openers Romeo Deonarain and Sachin Balgobin were ultra-defensive in their approach, adding 28 in 15.2 overs, and once they were separated, Berbice brought the chase to life, reducing the home side to 48-3.

Matthew Pottaya dismissed Balgobin for 11 off 52, the economical Deopersaud removed Deonarain for 22 off 62 and Budhoo got the big scalp of Van Lange for nine off 14.

Skipper Mavindra Dindyal and his deputy Alvin Mohabir then took controlled the chase, first weathering some tight bowling before finishing the game in a flurry.

The pair added an unbroken 43 for the fourth wicket to seal the win, further frustrating the Berbicians following their masterful 138-run, match-winning partnership the previous game at the same venue.

Dindyal ended on 31 off 39 (2x4s, 2x6s) and Mohabir 11 off 27 (2x4s). Deopersaud was the pick of the bowlers with 10-4-11-1, while Pottaya had 1-25 (9) and Budhoo 1-32 (7).

At the presentation ceremony, which was attended by President of the Guyana Cricket Board and Cricket West Indies Director Bissoondyal Singh and Guyana Cricket Board Technocrat Member Vicky Bharosay, the captains of the two sides were presented with the winner and runners-up trophies.

Individual awards were also presented to Dindyal for scoring the most runs (151), while Van Lange emerged with the most wickets (13).
