The Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of Adrian Steve Stephen, a miner of Kako Village, Upper Mazaruni in Region Seven.

According to a statement issued on Sunday, the 20-year-old died on Friday, April 19 at about 23:00 hrs at Rock Point Backdam, Jawalla village.

Police said the man was employed by a 44-year-old woman who owns the mining operation the man worked at. On Friday, the workers finished working at 17:00 hrs and returned to the camp where Stephen joined them for dinner but did not eat.

The miners said the man didn’t eat breakfast or lunch that day.

He eventually retired to bed and at about 23:00 hours, one of Stephen’s colleagues claimed that he was awakened by screams coming from Stephen and assumed that he was having a nightmare.

However, upon checking, he observed that Stephen was motionless and immediately alerted his other colleagues.

A report was made to the Police and the following day, at about 11:00 hours, Stephen was examined by a nurse, in the presence of a detective, and was pronounced dead.

No marks of violence were seen on the body.

The body is presently at Kamarang District Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
