Girl, 14, dies after struck by car at West Coast Berbice
A 14-year-old girl lost her life on Sunday following an accident along the No.41 Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
Dead is Richine Williams, also called Renesha, a student of the Belladrum Secondary School who hails from Lot 7 Paradise Village, WCB.
Reports are that motor car #HD 4290, driven by Thomas Crawford of Savannah Park, New Amsterdam, Berbice, struck the teen while she was crossing the road at around 14:00 hrs Sunday.
Police said Crawford was heading east along the northern driving lane of the No.41 Public Road at a speed of approximately 80 kilometres when the teen reportedly exited a minibus that was on the southern side of the same road.
According to Police, Williams ran from south to north into the path of the car. As a result, she sustained severe injuries about her body.
She was picked up in an unconscious state by a public-spirited citizen and transported to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital. She died while receiving treatment.
A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver of the car; there were three microgrammes of alcohol in the man’s system. A notice of intended prosecution was reportedly served to Crawford and he is in custody.
The girl’s body is at the Bailey’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
