Labourer, 22, fatally shot during attempted robbery

A 22-year-old labourer identified as Alvin Griffith was fatally shot on Sunday night during an attempt by two men to steal his motorcycle.

Police Headquarters, in a statement, revealed that the tragic incident occurred at about 21:30 hrs at ‘A’ Field, South Sophia, Georgetown.

Griffith was reportedly sitting on his black motorcycle CM 3560, outside his home, when the two suspects approached him; one of the suspects pointed a handgun at him and tried to steal his motorcycle.

A scuffle ensued between the men, resulting in the armed suspect discharging a round that hit Griffith to his chest.

Police said Griffith ran a short distance before collapsing.

Residents in the area then rushed to Griffith’s aid and managed to apprehend one of the suspects as they attempted to flee the scene. The suspect was subsequently identified as a 19-year-old of Campbell Street, Albouystown, Georgetown.

Griffith was then rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital by residents but was pronounced dead.

The suspect apprehended by residents was also taken to the hospital after he was beaten into an unconscious state by residents. He is currently hospitalised under police guard.

Griffith’s body is currently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing.
