Machinery Corporation of Guyana Limited (MACORP) trained an additional nine young people in heavy-duty equipment maintenance, a move expected to help satisfy the huge demand for technical skills locally.

The graduates who were part of the six-month training programme are: Alex Bahadur, Imran Mohamed, Ramon Bandoo, Tyrese Rose, Esron Joseph, Andy Smith, Clinton Edwin, Nateisha Naomi and Denzel Johnnathan.

Bahadur, 24, is the programme’s valedictorian while Naomi, 22, is the only female trainee in the batch.

At Friday’s graduation ceremony held at MACORP’s Providence, East Bank Demerara location, Bahadur said he always had an interest in machines and equipment. So he first went to the Government Technical Institute (GTI) and obtained a certificate in agricultural machinery.

He then wanted to be part of MACORP’s trainee technician programme. Though he was initially unsuccessful when he applied, he tried to get into the programme again and succeeded. Now, he stands as the proud valedictorian.

“This serves as a testament that one must not give up. Try and try again until you succeed.

“This is just the beginning of a long road ahead,” Bahadur said.

The trainees underwent this training at the MACOPR learning centre. According to the President and General Manager of the company, German Consuergra said this training is part of the company’s aim to provide sound product support for the machinery it distributes.

“… (product support) is the true core of what we do. We wanna have the best people,” he said.

MACORP is the exclusive authorised Caterpillar dealer in Guyana.

Now that they graduated from the programme, the nine graduates were all encouraged to fully employ their new technical skills and help meet the growing demand for technical skills locally.

Shortly, these “grease monkeys” will be servicing those heavy duty machinery.
If anyone feels offensive by the term “grease monkeys”, my apologies.
I believe that terminology is correct for their type of work.
There are “mechanics, brukcanics, painter, sprayer etc.”
