CI crowned champions of WDCA/Jit and Neelam 40-over competition

Cornelia Ida emerged champions of the West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA)/Jit and Neelam 40-over competition recently, defeating Windsor Forest by three wickets at the Meten-Meer-Zorg ground, West Coast Demerara.

Chasing a target of 246, Cornelia Ida achieved victory at 247-7 from 31.4 overs with Ushardeva Balgobin leading the way with an unbeaten 92 (14x4s).

Shahid Vieira chipped in with 52, while Shafeek Deonarine made 24, Thaddeus Lovell 18 and Aryan Persaud 17.

Bowling for Windsor Forest, Sachin Balgobin (2-33) and Chatram Nauth (2-40) were the pick of the bowlers.

Earlier when Windsor Forest batted, Kenzo Baksh led the way with 52, while Kellon Tracy and Deoram Chanderbir made 41 apiece and Kishaun Tracy 27.

Bowling for Cornelia Ida, leg-spinner Ushardeva Balgobin took 3-28 and Lovell 2-54.

For their success, Cornelia Ida pocketed G$200,00 and a trophy, while Windsor Forest collected G$50,000 and a trophy.

Ushardeva Balgobin was named Player-of-the-Match and also collected the award for the most wickets (13), while Sachin Balgobin scored the most runs (401), inclusive of three centuries. Jewell McAllister of McGill Superstars was named Best Wicketkeeper.

Sponsor Jeetendra Kishore expressed appreciation to the WDCA for an outstanding job in coordinating the tournament. He also congratulated both teams for reaching the final.

WDCA president Azeem Khan thanked Kishore for the sponsorship, which he said will aid the association to further improve cricket in the area, thereby affording it recognition at various levels in Demerara and Guyana.
