A 22-year-old Guyana Defence Force (GDF) rank is battling for life after being shot while putting up a fight with two masked bandits who invaded his Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD) house on Sunday.

Azim Khan, a GDF private, was shot in close proximity to the heart during the incident which occurred around 00:45hrs at Block 8, Mon Repos.

During an interview with the News Room on Wednesday, Azim’s brother, Abdool Khan, said Azim and some of his relatives were hanging out in the kitchen area of the house.

While seated, Abdool said Azim noticed two masked men entering the house through the front door which was left open.

Azim approached the bandits and a scuffle ensued. One of the men whipped out a firearm and discharged two rounds, one of which struck Azim.

Abdool said Azim had a quantity of cash in his possession. The cash, along with a gold chain he was wearing and his cellular phone were stolen.

Abdool was asleep when he was awoken by the sounds of gunshot.

Upon checking, he saw the men running out of the house.

“I just pick up my brother and drive to the hospital with he as soon as possible. They carry he straight into emergency,” he said.

Azim is currently a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital.

His condition is listed as critical and doctors told the family that there is a 50/50 chance of him surviving.

“They said he critical and its half and half chance of him surviving.

“I feel real bad because if he did call for me at least I could have come out and do something,” Abdool told the News Room.

The matter was reported to the police but no arrest has been made.

In fact, the family told the News Room that they are not satisfied with how the police are dealing with the matter. They said they hadn’t heard from or seen the police since they visited on the night of the incident.

“Me need justice fah meh son. Meh know it got thief man…yuh want something just tek it and go long yuh way. Don’t shoot anybody, don’t chop anybody, don’t interfere with anybody.
