Batavia, an Indigenous community in Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni), is getting a new $45 million nursery school as part of other investments to improve the delivery of education there, President Dr. Irfaan Ali said on Thursday.

The Guyanese Head of State said this as he addressed residents of Batavia and surrounding communities during an outreach engagement on Thursday.

“We spent close to $90 million on improving education here alone,” Dr Ali told the residents.

Aside from the new nursery school, the primary school will undergo much-needed repairs and maintenance at a cost of about $10.9 million. The teachers’ quarters will also be upgraded and furnished at a cost of about $9 million.

And the schoolchildren in the community, like all others, will benefit from the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) ‘Because We Care’ cash grant and the cash grants given to teachers to purchase supplies needed.

The President said he is particularly proud of the developments unfolding in this Indigenous community, more so given the dearth of resources channelled into it in the years gone by.
