Almost four years after he was charged with causing the death of 23-year-old Terry Danraj, a truck driver was on Thursday freed of the charges due to insufficient evidence.
Eric Kennedy of West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was freed after a no case submission was put forward by his attorney, Bernard DaSilva.
He was on trial before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Kennedy was charged in October 2020 for driving a truck in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of Danraj on Saffon and Sussex, Georgetown. The accident occurred on May 25, 2020.
He initially denied the allegation and was placed on $300,000 bail.
The News Room understands that at around 21:00 hrs on the day in question, Danraj was a passenger in motor car PSS 1314, which was being driven by a 26-year-old resident of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.
The vehicle was reportedly proceeding north at a fast rate when it collided with the trailer of the container truck at the intersection.
The front of the car was pinned under the trailer which caused Danraj to be pinned inside.
Danraj, who was unconscious, along with the driver of the car, were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
However, around 13:30 hrs on May 26, Danraj of Ogle, ECD, succumbed to his injuries. He was the owner of ‘Terry Wash Bay’.
