A labourer and a taxi driver have been remanded to prison after they were charged separately in relation to the murder of security guard Paul Waterman.
Waterman was killed during a robbery at a Vreed-en-Hoop supermarket back in March.
The accused are Kaden Bailey, 24 of Crane, West Coast Demerara and 25-year-old Saeed Alli, a resident of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.
Bailey and Alli were charged on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
They were not required to plea to the capital offence which was read to them by Senior Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
The two men are accused of murdering Waterman during the course of a robbery on March 11, 2024 at the People Supermarket at Vreed-en- Hoop, West Coast Demerara.
Their next court date is June 10, 2024.
Police Headquarters in a statement had said Waterman, a resident of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo was reportedly armed with a .32 Taurus pistol with ten matching rounds of ammunition.
Around 15:00hrs on the day in question, Police said, three bandits, two of whom were armed with handguns, entered the supermarket and held Waterman and the supermarket’s proprietors – 49-year-old Ping Xian Lin and his wife, 43-year-old Li Yan Ohen – at gunpoint.
The suspects then took an undisclosed amount of cash, a quantity of Digicel and GTT phone cards, one cellphone and one DVR.
During the armed robbery, however, a scuffle ensued between Waterman and one of the suspects. It was reported that the suspect involved in the altercation discharged a round that hit Waterman and caused him to fall to the ground.
Waterman was then relieved of his firearm and cellphone.
The suspects proceeded to rob the supermarket and then made their escape by running north through Evergreen Street towards Best Village.
Waterman was later rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead
Police recovered one .32 spent shell at the scene.
