Schoonord to Crane four-lane highway 85% complete – Croal

Though faced with some delays, the Schoonord to Crane four-lane highway is currently about 85 percent complete and works are expected to be finalised by the end of June 2024.

“Overall, with the works there, if you include the roundabouts because those are not part of the lots, in terms of the normal pathway for the road. We are about 85 percent completed.

“We are pushing ahead to complete. We are hoping to be able to bring it in by the end of June-all works,” Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal told the News Room during a telephone interview.

The new $11.8 billion Schoonord, West Bank Demerara to Crane, West Coast Demerara four-lane highway is a transformative and modern project.

It will significantly alleviate traffic congestion on the West Coast of Demerara.

The project is being executed by eight contractors and is divided into eleven lots.

According to Croal, seven of the lots are completed.

“By and large most of the lots are completed, except there are four that has to do some casting on them,” Croal said.

The contract for the highway was signed in September 2022.

The project sees the construction of 4.1 kilometers of a dual carriageway reinforced concrete road with an emergency lane as well as 2.4 kilometers of road rehabilitation and upgrade.

It will also feature two roundabouts, 11 reinforced concrete box culverts, 36 pre-stressed bridges, and road signage and markings.
