Baby dies in West Coast Berbice accident

An 18-month-old baby died in an accident Wednesday afternoon at the Brittania Public Road, West Coast Berbice.

Dead is Karson Mayers.

Police Headquarters reported that the baby and another person identified as Monique Richmond were passengers in a motorcar (#PAG 5148) driven by Kishawn Mayers at about 13:45 hrs when the accident occurred.

The car was reportedly west along the public road at a fast rate. While negotiating a right turn, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and ended up on the northern side of the road, in the path of a motor lorry (#GXX 1685) that had a trailer (#TAD 3229) attached to it. The lorry was driving east along the northern side of the road.

The car reportedly collided with the right side of the trailer, causing the baby and Richmond, who were both sitting on the right side of the car, to receive injuries.

The passengers were taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital for treatment but the baby was pronounced dead soon after. Richmond has been admitted as a patient for observation.

Breathalyser tests were conducted on both drivers, revealing that the lorry driver had five micrograms, and the car driver had four micrograms of alcohol respectively on their breath. The prescribed limit is 38 micrograms, so both men were below the limit.

Nevertheless, notices of intended prosecution were served on both drivers. An investigation is ongoing.

Unfortunately, this baby was not driving and speeding… but died and added to the road death statistics.
Even young children are not safe, just like GPL poles.
