To ensure that workers are informed of their rights and can access advice when needed, the Ministry of Labour on Wednesday launched its “Labour Advice” mobile application.

The app, which was designed to complement the labour department’s computerised management information system, will not replace the existing walk-in service.

Rather, it will allow for the digital management of inquiries being submitted to the labour department.

Through the app, a complaint can be filed and also monitored.

Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton said the app is user friendly and will allow workers to interact directly with the Ministry at their convenience.

“We are now moving into the phase of technology and more readily access to the Labour Ministry.

“I would hope that the application can be useful – it would be helpful to citizens of Guyana to resolve their problems that they may have from time to time. We are open, we are ready and we are giving free service,” Hamilton said.

Chief Labour Officer Dhaneshwar Deonarine said with the view of providing and delivering better services, the Ministry has over the years adapted measures to modernise its systems and methods of management.

“(The app) provides an easy and quick way to access the Ministry’s advisory services and to launch a labour dispute or complaint,” he said.

In fact, Deonarine pointed out that the information system has allowed for targeted decisions which has resulted in significant reduction in the number of complaints received by the ministry.

From January to May this year, he said the Ministry recorded a 27 percent decrease in complaints, when compared to the same period last year.

“So we already seeing the benefit of implementing and organizing our system and introducing information technology,” Deonarine said.

The app was developed by the National Data Management Authority.

To access the app, people can download and install it via Goggle Playstore or the Apple Store. They will then be required to create an account using either their email address or telephone number.

Thereafter, they will be prompted to login in after which they can begin to use the app.
