South Ruimveldt man, 55, dies in accident


Sooklall Pharous, a 55-year-old South Ruimveldt, Georgetown resident died on Friday evening after two vehicles collided at the intersection of South Road and Oronoque Street, Georgetown.
Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred at about 18:25 hrs Friday.
Based on reports, a 36-year-old resident of South Road was driving motor car #PJJ 4643 east along South Road at a fast rate. At the same time, a 41-year-old Buxton, East Coast Demerara resident was driving hire car, #HD 5268, south along the eastern driving lane of Oronoque Street.
Pharous was a passenger in the hire car.
At the intersection of South Road and Oronoque Street, the driver of hire car reportedly failed to stop and ensure that it was safe and clear at the stop sign. He then drove into the path of motor car.
The front of motor car collided with the right side of the hire car, and as a result of the collision, the hire car ended up in a trench on the side of the road. Pharous was thrown out of the car.
Both drivers were taken out of their vehicles by public-spirited citizens and Emergency Medical Technicians, placed in an ambulance, and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they received medical attention.
At about 22:50 hrs last night, Pharous was retrieved from the trench by public-spirited citizens and escorted to GPHC where he was pronounced dead by a doctor.
The body is at the GPHC’s Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigations continue.
