Venezuelan sets miner alight

Police are on the hunt for a Venezuelan man who allegedly set a miner alight a miner whom he accused of having a relationship with his wife.

The victim has been identified as Valon Evans called “Doug,” 32 of Essequibo Coast.

In a statement, Police Headquarters said around 20:00hrs Saturday, Evans left his camp and went to the Wenamu Backdam landing, Cuyuni River, where he had a few drinks to celebrate his birthday.

Hours after, Police said Evans went to the camp of the suspect, who is known as “Manuel”, and he fell asleep.

According to the Police, at around 04:00hrs Sunday, the suspect returned to his camp and saw Evans sleeping. This caused him to become annoyed,  and he accused Evans of having an affair with his reputed wife.

The suspect then threw a flammable substance on Evans and set him alight, Police added.

The suspect then made good his escape.

The injured Evans went to the Wenamu Health Post where he is currently being treated. His condition is listed as stable.

Police said efforts are being made to locate the suspect.
