Missing Canje man was beaten to death with an iron bar – suspect confesses


Days after he left home, the decomposed body of Canje, Berbice resident, Dharmindranauth Mahadeo Surujnauth was found and the Police have since arrested a suspect who reportedly confessed to beating him to death with an iron bar.

Information reaching the News Room revealed that 56-year-old Surujnauth left his Caracas Vryheid Village, West Canje Berbice home which he shared with his daughter to visit a female friend.

However, Surujnauth never returned and efforts to locate him prove futile. A missing person’s report was subsequently filed at the Central Police Station.

On June 22, the Police received a call informing them that the body of a male was discovered in a swampy area at Vryheid Village, West Canje Berbice.

The body was later identified as that of Surujnauth. The News Room understands that it was initially suspected that Surujnauth was under the influence of alcohol when he lost track of his way home and ended up in the swamp, where he met his demise.

But the investigation took a turn on Wednesday after a post-mortem examination revealed that Surujnauth was murdered.

The pathologist gave his cause of death as multiple injuries and a fractured skull.

As the investigation widened, the News Room was reliably informed that Police went to the area later the same day where they contacted the suspect, a 26-year-old unemployed man.

The suspect was questioned and the News Room was told that he reportedly admitted to murdering Surujnauth.

The suspect claimed that Surujnauth went to his house sometime last week and kicked down his door and out of anger he lashed him with an iron bar multiple times.

Investigators later accompanied the suspect to his house where pointed out the area in the house where the incident occurred.

The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
