Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall said a letter requesting information on the investigations that prompted United States sanctions recently will be dispatched this week.

The sanctions on the Mohameds and Mae Thomas were instituted recently after a US Treasury Department office said it unearthed fraud and corruption.

Consequently, the government revoked the cambio licence of the Mohameds and has been determining what other measures are needed. The Guyana Government also committed to investigating the allegations and as such, the Finance Ministry requested information from the US.

In a statement issued last week, the Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh said Guyana was updated by its US partners that a request should now be sent from the office of the Attorney General to the US Department of Justice, who will then work with the Office of Foreign Assets Control to gather source documentation on the matter.

Nandlall was asked for an update on this process.

“I have not done so as yet. I expect to do so before the end of this week,” the Attorney General said during his ‘Issues in the News’ Facebook programme.

Nazar Mohamed and his son, Azruddin, were sanctioned by the US Department of the Treasury. Ventures associated with the Mohamed’s family, namely Mohamed’s Enterprise, Hadi’s World and Team Mohamed’s Racing, were also sanctioned. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Mae Thomas was also implicated in the corruption allegations and she has since been sent on leave and she has resigned from the leadership of the governing People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C).
