Press Release from the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo)

The GuySuCo Cavalcade of Sports made a triumphant return on July 6, 2024, marking a joyous comeback after an eight-year hiatus.

Hosted at the Port Mourant Community Centre, this event not only celebrated athletic excellence, but also underscored significant government initiatives aimed at community development.

Organised by the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), the Cavalcade of Sports featured spirited competitions across various disciplines, showcasing the talent and dedication of athletes from seven participating teams.

These included GuySuCo Head Office, GuySuCo Training Centre/Port Mourant and estates, namely Skeldon, Rose Hall, Albion, Blairmont and Uitvlugt.

Rose Hall secured 21 points, while GuySuCo Head Office, Skeldon and Uitvlugt Estates also showcased commendable performances with 11, eight and seven points respectively.

The event was graced by the presence of Zulfikar Mustapha, Minister of Agriculture, underscoring the government’s dedication to supporting local sports and community initiatives.

In his address, Minister Mustapha reflected on GuySuCo’s historical role in nurturing sporting talent, citing figures like Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Joe Solomon and other cricketing legends who emerged through initiatives supported by GuySuCo.

Minister Mustapha also announced ambitious plans to enhance community engagements through sports, including the introduction of international football coaches to scout talent within GuySuCo’s communities and across the country.

This initiative aims to provide professional coaching and mentorship, fostering the development of future athletes and promoting healthy lifestyles nationwide.

The Cavalcade of Sports attracted a robust turnout from surrounding communities, featuring cultural performances by students from the GuySuCo Training Centre/Port Mourant and offering family-friendly activities that enriched the festive atmosphere.
