Taxi driver nabbed with ganja worth $34.9M jailed, fined $104M


Naasik Alli, the taxi driver nabbed last week with about 116.6 kilogrammes (or about 257 pounds) of marijuana worth about $34.9 million, was sentenced to three years and eight months in jail.
He was also fined $104 million.
Alli appeared at the Albion Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge which was laid under section (5) (1) (a) (i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances ( Control) Act Chapter 10:10. He made the appearance before Magistrate Tuana Hardy.
Last week, it was reported that Police ranks stopped the driver along the No. 45 Public Road and embarked on a search of his vehicle.
Seven rice bags which contained 53 brick-like parcels wrapped in transparent plastic were found. It was suspected that the bags contained cannabis.
The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was taken into custody.
The parcels were weighed and amounted to 116.6 kilogrammes, carrying a street value of about $34.9 million.
