Traffic crawls after sleeping crew causes vessel to ‘jam’ Harbour Bridge

Authorities are in the process of determining the extent of damage after a coastal vessel collided with the Demerara Harbour Bridge early Tuesday morning.

Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, told the News Room that majority of the damage occurred at Spans 42 and 43 of the bridge.

An anchor block which was recently placed at the bridge also suffered some damage.

“The anchor blocks that we placed recently protected us and that damage. Some of the studs from the bridge at Span 42 and 43 were damaged as well and some other ancillary damage,” Indar said.

The incident occurred around 05:30hrs.

The vessel, MV Princess Anisa is registered to INS Shipping at Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara.

The incident occurred on the northern side of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

“Reports are that the crew men slept away and jam the side of the bridge,” Indar told the News Room.

Indar said that the owner of the vessel will have to pay for the damage.

“They will be held responsible,” Indar said.

While the bridge is open to traffic, the incident has resulted in some disruption in the free flow of traffic.
