A five-member Guyanese team is set to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which officially opens today.

Leading the charge is Emanuel Archibald, CAC Games gold medalist and Pan Am bronze medalist in the 100 meters. Joining him is fellow track star Aliyah Abrams.

In the pool, Raekwon Noel and Aleka Persaud represent Guyana, while table tennis ace Chelsea Edghill makes her second Olympic appearance.

According to the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), to optimize their performance, the athletes underwent rigorous training camps.

Archibald and Edghill, along with their respective coaches, participated in the Mulhouse High-Performance Training Camp, organized by Pan Am Sports. The camp focused on acclimatization to French conditions.

Archibald further enhanced his preparation by training with his Jamaican coach and Jamaican athletes in Stuttgart, Germany.

This additional camp, supported by the GOA, concluded on July 22nd, with Archibald joining coach Mark Scott in Mulhouse for final adjustments.

Noel and Abrams opted for final preparations with their coaches, Peter Holcroft and Alleyne Francique, respectively, based in the USA.

The swimming events, taking place at the Paris La Défense Arena, commence July 27, with Noel in the men’s 400m freestyle and Aleka Persaud in the women’s 100m freestyle.

Edghill’s table tennis campaign begins on July 27 at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, with a first-round match against Cameroon’s Sarah Hanffou.

On the track, Archibald will compete in the men’s 100m heats on August 2, while Aliyah Abrams will run in the women’s 400m heats on August 5.

    A Historic Opening Ceremony

Paris 2024 is reimagining the Olympic opening ceremony, moving it from a stadium to the iconic Seine River. The parade of athletes will take place on boats, offering a unique and unforgettable experience for athletes and spectators alike.

As the Games unfold, Guyana’s athletes will strive to make their mark on the world stage.
