The Georgetown Cricket Club commenced its annual summer camp on Monday, aiming to lay the groundwork for the next icon of the sport locally and internationally.
Though the current weather patterns could hamper the on-field activities, a team of experienced youth coaches, led by former national cricketer Peter Persaud, plans to make the most of instilling the fundamentals from July 29 to August 9.
Sabrina Munroe, the academy’s first female coach, and Orin Bailey and Garvin Nedd, the seasoned coaches, are also part of the team.
Persaud charged the budding talents to put their best foot forward and showcase their skills to the best of their ability. The club will look to scout players and ideally transition them into the club for more structured practice.
Former national player and decorated captain Leon Johnson, a distinguished club product who graduated from the club’s cricket camp 24 years ago, told the players to make the most of the opportunities and be attentive to the coaches’ teachings.
Johnson indicated that while ideally, he would love to spend more time with the players, he would dedicate time to helping them during the camp.
Club President Jonathan Yearwood implored the group to demonstrate discipline, which is vital for success. The first step in showing such a characteristic is ensuring there are prompts for the sessions, which commence at 09:00h.
The club expressed immense appreciation for the support of Queensway Security, Guyana Beverages Inc., Sankar’s Auto Colour, and Auto Works, among others, in making the camp a reality again.
