President Dr. Irfaan Ali administered the Oath of Office to the new Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), Dr. Nanda Kishore Gopaul and members of the Public Service Appellate Tribunal: Justice Beasraj Singh Roy, Hydar Ally and Abiola Wong- Inniss.
Justice Roy was also appointed Chairman of the Public Service Appellate Tribunal.
These individuals were appointed at a ceremony held on Monday at the Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown .
In his address to the officials sworn-in, President Ali emphasised the need for more citizens to know about the functions of these and other bodies.
According to him, citizens would become more empowered to harness the services of these bodies if they are better edified.
“We need to do more to ensure that all of our citizens are acquainted with the different commissions and are acquainted with their rights,” the Guyanese Head of State said.
The tribunal provides public servants with a means of recourse in matters of appointments, dismissal or other forms of disciplinary action.
Meanwhile, the PUC is responsible for regulating public utilities such as those services provided by the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI).
