Escaped convict recaptured in Region Eight
Jose Awad, a 30-year-old inmate who escaped from the Lusignan Prison, was recaptured on Friday, following an extensive manhunt. Awad had been serving a sentence for ‘Break-and-Enter-and-Larceny’ when he fled the prison on May 14, 2024.
The recapture occurred at approximately 17:50 hrs in El Paso/Tumatumari Village, Region 8. Acting on intelligence provided by Senior Superintendent Khalid Mandall, Commander of Regional Division #8, Station Sergeant Blackman, accompanied by a team of officers, launched a search operation.
The operation commenced early Friday morning when Sergeant Blackman and his team departed from Mahdia Police Station. They utilized a motor pickup truck (#PAD 3270), driven by Constable 24291 Marshall, and a Force ATV (#CN 5815), driven by Constable 24952 Herod. The team engaged with Community Policing Group (CPG) members in Tumatumari (El Paso), leading to Awad’s apprehension.
Awad was also found in possession of an unregistered motorcycle, reportedly stolen from Roger Hinds. He has been charged with ‘Escape from Lawful Custody’ and ‘Simple Larceny’.
Following his arrest, Awad was informed of the allegations against him and cautioned accordingly. He was transported, along with the stolen motorcycle, back to Mahdia Police Station, where he remains in custody.
