A training programme geared for hinterland and remote communities concluded on Friday with the graduation of the 32 participants from Region Two.
The intensive ICT training programme was held at the Regional Democratic Council at Anna Regina. This programme, aimed at equipping individuals with vital digital skills, is part of a broader initiative to bridge the technological gap in hinterland and remote communities.
The training, which began on July 29, was conducted by Global Technology Inc. with funding from the Office of the Prime Minister. The programme sought to empower participants by enhancing their digital literacy and providing access to essential ICT tools.
In her keynote address, Ms. Vilma De Silva, Regional Chairperson for Region 2, highlighted the government’s commitment to human resource development, emphasising the critical role of education.
“Our government has been focusing on our human resource development, and that starts with education,” De Silva stated.
“Our country is progressing, and when I see so many youths here, I am confident that our nation will continue to thrive.”
Ms. De Silva also encouraged the graduates to use their newly acquired skills to contribute to the advancement of their communities, urging them to challenge the stigma associated with the term “hinterland poor” and redefine the narrative surrounding their regions.
She expressed her gratitude to President Dr. Irfaan Ali and the government of Guyana for creating opportunities that support the growth and development of youth and citizens across the country.
The graduation ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including Dr. Jacob Opadeyi, Director of the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL), Eliza Bascome from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, representatives from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, regional officials, as well as the facilitators of the training programme.
This event marks another step forward in the government’s ongoing efforts to uplift remote communities through education and technological empowerment.
