Nine homeless after fire destroys house in Kwakwani

Nine people were left homeless following a fire that destroyed their home in Kwakwani, Berbice River.

According to a press release from the Guyana Fire Service, a call was received around 18:10 hrs of a fire at Lot 68, Second Phase Housing Scheme, Kwakwani. A water tender with five auxiliary firefighters responded promptly and arrived at the scene at 18:15 hrs with 1,703 liters of water.

Despite their rapid efforts, the two-storey building was destroyed. The home, owned by 71-year-old Michael Primo, was occupied by him and eight family members.

The Guyana Fire Service reported that the fire was caused by an unattended electrical stove. Flames from the stove ignited a curtain, which then spread to other combustible materials in the house.

There were no reported injuries. The Guyana Fire Service has urged the public to exercise caution when using electrical appliances to prevent such tragedies.
