A tragic accident claimed the life of 29-year-old Horman Bumbery from Matthew’s Ridge. The fatal incident occurred on August 12, 2024, along Jawbone Backdam Trail.
According to preliminary reports, Bumbery and two others were traveling on a motor tractor when the vehicle overturned. The driver, 35-year-old Anzel Ashby, was arrested and is currently in police custody. He is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
The tractor was descending a hill when it hit a pothole, causing it to topple onto its left side. Bumbery was pinned underneath the tractor, while 31-year-old Leon Meadas, who was sitting on the right-side fender, fell off and sustained injuries to his left foot and ribs.
Passersby rushed to the scene and helped remove Bumbery from under the tractor. Emergency services were contacted, and Meadas was transported to Baramita Cottage Hospital by a passerby. He was admitted in serious condition and is undergoing treatment.
When police arrived at approximately 10:15 p.m., Bumbery had already been transported to the hospital by public-spirited individuals, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Ashby, who was found to have a breath alcohol content of 0.0 micrograms, was treated for minor injuries and later released.
The body of Bumbery has been moved to the Port Kaituma Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination. Meadas has been medevaced to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for further treatment.
The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
