In what has been seen as one of Guyana’s biggest narcotic exercises, Police Officers and Coast Guard ranks on Friday destroyed $2.5 billion worth of cannabis at De Veldt, Berbice River.

Police Headquarters said the eradication exercise was conducted between 05:00 hrs and 12″30 hrs.

Ranks discovered a suspected “stash house” at De Veldt and upon inspection, they found 1,300 pounds of dried suspected cannabis, 100 pounds of suspected cannabis seeds, 520 12 gauge cartridges, and one .22 long-range rifle with 19 matching rounds of ammunition.

Subsequently, three abandoned farms- measuring about three acres each- were discovered. It was reported that one of the farms had forty trays of suspected cannabis seedlings, each measuring about two inches in height.

The suspected stash house, along with the items found and the cannabis farms, were photographed, and then all destroyed by fire.

The estimated street value of the cannabis destroyed in the exercise is more than $2.5 billion.

Meanwhile, the 12-gauge cartridge and the rifle with matching rounds of ammunition were lodged and taken to the Central Police Station where they were photographed, marked, sealed, and lodged.

No one was arrested in the operation.
