Six Brazilian nationals were arrested on Sunday after an illegal mining site was found during an operation between the Joint Services and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).

Police Headquarters reported that six Brazilians, two women and four men, were arrested for illegal mining in the Amatuk Potaro River, Region Eight (Potaro- Siparuni).

Those arrested are: Leo Vitor Lucas De Arruda, 22; Francione Barbosa DaSilva, 40; Jeova Marques Pinho, 36; Elivane Ferreira Dos Santons, 51; Silvania Andrade de Oliveira, 45; and Diemission Da Silva Rodrigues, 36.

These individuals were questioned and instructed by the Joint Services and GGMC officials to vacate the illegal operation.

They were reportedly  informed of the allegation that they were mining illegally and were placed under arrest.

The suspects were subsequently escorted from the site to Ogle Airport, where they were then escorted to the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters. An attorney visited the HQ and advised the clients to remain silent.

The Brazilian nationals remain in Police custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation.
