Guyana’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination results for 2024 reveal a modest dip in overall pass rates, slipping from 67.37% in 2023 to 63.23% this year.

This data, unveiled by Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain during a press conference at Queen’s College auditorium on Tuesday, paints a nuanced picture of the country’s academic landscape.

Out of 11,612 students who tackled the CSEC exams this year, the statistics reveal both progress and setbacks.

Hussain highlighted that there was a notable increase in performance across 12 subjects, Meanwhile, seven subjects held steady, and another seven saw exceptional results with pass rates exceeding 90% .

At the CSEC level, Grades One to Three are considered passing scores.

However, not all subjects fared well.

English A saw a slight decline, dropping from 72% in 2023 to 69% in 2024. English B showed improvement, rising from 64% to 70%.

Mathematics, a critical subject for many, also experienced a decrease, with its pass rate falling from 34% last year to 31% this year.

Additional Mathematics, on the other hand, recorded a significant increase, achieving a pass rate of 53%.

In the realm of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), most subjects performed strongly, with pass rates hovering around 80%, except for Clothing, Textiles, and Fashion, which saw a lower pass rate of 71%.

For those eager to dive into the detailed results, they will be accessible on the Ministry’s website later today (that is, Tuesday).
